Listing Mature Content Correctly - Effective starting July 29th, 2024

This policy is effective starting on July 29th, 2024. Click here to view the version of this policy that is effective through July 28th, 2024.

Etsy aims to maintain a marketplace appropriate for general audiences, but some content may not be suitable for everyone. If you are selling items with mature content as defined below, you must follow the listing rules outlined in this policy.

When listing an item that has mature content, the first thumbnail image in your item listing should be adequately obscured. Additional images in the listing may show the item in its entirety.

Listings containing mature content must also be tagged with the word "mature".

Mature content falls into three categories:

1. Nudity Most kinds of nudity aren’t allowed on Etsy (see our Adult Nudity and Sexual Content Policy for more information). However, we do allow items containing photos and photo-realistic depictions of buttocks and nipples, so long as these body parts are obscured in the first image of the listing. Graphic mature content also may not appear in the public areas of your account, including but not limited to username, avatar, or shop home.

An item is adequately obscured if the gluteal cleft and female nipple and areola are entirely covered with an opaque censor bar, or blurred to the point that they cannot be distinguished from the surrounding skin, as demonstrated below:

Photograph of buttocks with obscured gluteal cleft
Photograph of female breasts, with obscured areola and nipple

2. Sexual Content This includes items intended for use during sexual activity, items used to promote sexual wellness, items used for sexual pleasure enhancement, fetish content, and non-photographic depictions or descriptions of sexual activity. Examples include:

  • Sexual wellness items (such as kegel weights)
  • Permitted adult toys and sexual accessories
  • BDSM/bondage gear
  • Sex furniture
  • Non-photographic depictions of sex acts, without visible genitalia
  • Items, such as clothing, with language describing explicit or euphemistic sexual activity

3. Graphic Materials This includes items with violent imagery, gory imagery, or profane text or imagery (some violent items are prohibited - see our Violent Items policy). This also includes explicit taxidermy.

Examples Include:

  • Excessive use of profane language in print or imagery
  • Imagery depicting graphic dispositions of human bodies, including dead, dying, profusely bleeding, burned, etc.
  • Gory visuals, such as mutilated body parts or exposed internal organs
  • Explicit types or representations of taxidermy, such as wet specimens or displaying internal organs

Graphic mature content also may not appear in the public areas of your account, including but not limited to username, avatar, or shop home.
