A halter top is a garment with a halter-style neckline, which uses two straps that tie or attach at the back of the neck instead of over the shoulders. While some handmade halter tops have straps that tie together, others feature fixed straps that slip over the head or snap. Women’s halter tops expose large portions of the upper back, shoulders, and sometimes the midriff, making this style a popular garment to wear on warm days.

First seen in the 1930s as a dramatic neckline on formal gowns, halter necklines were based on the high-necked, sleeveless designs of some styles of Asian clothing. In the 1940s, the halter top emerged as a popular two-piece bathing suit top, popularized by Hollywood movie stars. The design’s simplicity made halter tops easy to make on home sewing machines, and because they require smaller amounts of fabric, they became commonplace during World War II because war demands limited the cloth supply.

Halter-style tops are made with nearly every fabric imaginable, from crochet halter tops with bohemian flair to versatile denim halter tops that transform effortlessly from casual cool to dressy with a change of accessories. Slip into these popular styles of halter tops:

  • Open-back: The back is completely exposed with a backless halter top.
  • Choker neck: Choker neck halter shirts have a band of material that fits snugly around the neck.
  • Crop top: Crop tops in the halter style cut off at the waist. Halter crop tops can have any style of halter neckline.
  • High-neck: The straps in a high-neck halter-style top aren’t noticeably separate from the neck and body of the shirt, with the neckline resting close to the neck.
  • Plunge: The plunge in this halter neck top style may be a subtle plunge, a cowl neck plunge, or a deep plunge.
  • Handkerchief: Handkerchief halters have a hem that’s styled like a handkerchief in either a diamond shape at the lowest point or an all-over hemline that’s asymmetric.
  • Spaghetti strap: In halter tank top styles, spaghetti shoulder straps are a delicate design detail with a feminine look.
  • Criss-crossed: This halter-style top features a front criss-cross pattern that loops around the neck.
